READING WINNERS

First grade student at Austin Elementary School Augustine Mendoza and second grader Eva Licon were named the top readers during a contest held at the school. Mendoza read for 1,005 minutes in a two-week period while Licon read for 1,350 minutes. The contest was sponsored by the Friends of the Library and both students received a book and a special hat. Other participants received bookmarks.
 

Garcia earns bachelor degree

Michelle Jo Garcia received her Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Texas of the Permian Basin recently.
Garcia majored in biology with a minor in chemistry.
She is currently attending the summer session at the University of Houston for Optometry School.
Her parents are J.J. and Delma Garcia of Pecos.

Rodriguez has seventh birthday

Donovan Rodriguez Jr. celebrated his 7th birthday with a party held in his honor at Maxey Park on Saturday, May 29.
Theme for the event was Rugrats and sandwiches, dip, chips, cake, cookies and punch were served to the guests who helped him celebrate.
Rodriguez received many gifts including toys and clothes.
He is the son of Donny and Laura Rodriguez of Pecos.

Workman makes Dean's List

Lindley Workman, of Pecos, was named to the Dean's List for the Spring Semester 1999 at the University of North Texas.
Only students who have earned a 3.5 grade point average or better while completing at least 12 semester hours during the past semester earn the distinction of the Dean's Honor Roll.
Workman is a junior radio, television and film major with a minor in communication studies.
She is the daughter of Jerry and Emma Workman of Pecos.

Summer workshop planned

A Summer 4-H Food and Nutrition Workshop will be held during the summer vacation.
Sign-ups are currently being held at the Reeves County Extension Office, located at 700 Daggett, Suite E, or call 915-447-9041.
This is an opportunity to learn cooking skills, working with others, nutritional information, kitchen and food safety, how to read a recipe and much more.
The first meeting will be held from 1:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m., Thursday, June 17 at the extension office.
Last day to sign-up is Friday, June 11.
This workshop is for everyone, not only for 4-Her's.
