Begay begans internship at research center

Misty Moon Begay, a senior Agricultural Services and
Development major from Tarleton State University, has begun
her student internship with the Texas A&M Agricultural
Research & Experiment Extension Center in Stephenville. She
is under the direct supervision of Ronald M. Jones, a
research scientist and agronomist at the station.

Begay will be in the community for 10 weeks for the purpose
of receiving training in animal waste management; and soil
and water quality analysis. This arrangement has been made
possible by mutual agreement between the Texas A&M
Experiment Station, whose executive director is Dr. Marshall
J. McFarland; and Tarleton State University. The intern will
assist with all activities concerning the local animal waste
management program.

Begay graduated from Pecos High School in 1994, and first
went to work for the Texas A&M Research and Experiment
Station near Pecos, under the direction of Dr. Jaroy Moore.

She has completed training in the cotton, entomology, range
grasses and forage, and the plant breeding in peanut
departments.

She has also just completed all steps necessary to become a
Texas Hunter and Angler Fishing Instructor and will be
receiving her Bachelor of Science Degree in Agricultural
Services and Development from Tarleton State University in
August.

She is the daughter of Steve and Bertha Begay of Toyah.

Pecos woman honored by Girl Scouts

One Pecos woman was among eighteen women from across West
Texas that were recognized recently at a banquet at the
Petroleum Club in Midland as Women of Distinction by the
Permian Basin Girl Scout Council.

Debra Thomas, of Pecos, was one of the honorees at the
special event.

Thomas is the executive director of the West of the Pecos
Museum, a small business owner, an active member of the
Pecos Business and Professional Women and a member of the
Board of the Chamber of Commerce.

She is still able to find time to be an active adult Girl
Scout leader. She is a past board member of the Permian
Basin Council. She says that the Girl Scout Promise and Law
have been engraved in her heart and she still enjoys
watching flag ceremonies.

Since 1992, the Girl Scouts have annually selected women who
have been a part of the organization, either as girls or
adults, and whose adult lives exemplify community leadership
and serve as role models for young women.

Other honorees this year are: Joan Baskin, Iris Foster,
Linda Foster, Elsie Hugly, Alice Park and Dr. Deana Savage,
all of Midland. Also honored were Iris Correa, Alma
Guerrero, Margaret Kerley, Carolyn Medlock, and Mary Kaye
Moore, all of Odessa. Other honorees include, Laura W. Bush,
First Lady of Texas; Donna Adams of Fort Davis; Janet
Frizell Kopec of Garland; Joan Lamkin of Marathon; Mary
Lucille LaQuey of McCamey and Brooke Wiseman of Chicago.
Keynote speaker for this year’s event was Brooke Wiseman,
Chief Executive Officer, Girl Scouts of Chicago.

Entertainment during the dinner was provided by Satin
Springs of Permian High School.

The evening also included the presentation of scholarships
to Senior Girl Scouts. The Mary Wynn Hinkle Gold Award
Scholarship to Liberty Lentz of Kermit; the Janice Eleanor
Hill Matthews Gold Award Scholarship to Reagan Viney of
Midland; and the Betty Jo Greene Morgan Graduating Senior
Scholarship was awarded to Amanda Havens of Alpine. Proceeds
from the dinner support the Girl Scout scholarship programs.

SPECIAL TREAT - Students in Debra Terry’s second grade class
at Austin Elementary School enjoyed pizza recently
compliments of Pecos Pizza Hut. The group earned the special
treat through the Book-It Program sponsored by Pizza Hut.
