Eagles' netters get best of Wildcats

PECOS, Mar. 23 -- The Pecos Eagles tennis team got to play a
lot of matches over the weekend, as their own tournament
turned into a two-team affair against the Fabens Wildcats.

Coach Bernadette Ornelas said Monahans dropped out of the
tournament, and the Eagles' junior varsity players ended up
taking their place in the singles, doubles and mixed doubles
divisions.

"The players were able to play more matches than in a
regular tournament. They all played six matches or more,"
she said.

"I was very pleased with the girls singles and girls
doubles, and we also went ahead and played mixed doubles,
because we will be having it in the fall, so we're getting
players used to it right now," Ornelas said.

Pecos wound up winning all of the division titles, with the

Pecos hosts Fabens in district opener

PECOS, Mar. 23 -- The Fabens Wildcats are a Class 4A team
for the first time in baseball this year, but they actually
have a Class 3A enrollment, which may or may not be bad news
for the Pecos Eagles.

Pecos -- unbeaten against Class 4A and 5A teams in the 1999
baseball season but only 5-5-1 against Class 3A opponents --
begins the District 2-4A portion of their schedule tonight,
when they host Fabens in a 7:30 p.m. game at Eagle Field.

Coach Bubba Williams said Joshua Casillas, 4-1, would start
on the mound tonight against Fabens, one of three district
schools that moved up from Class 3A last year, along with
Clint and El Paso Mountain View, though Fabens actually has
fewer students that Abilene Wylie, one of the schools the
Eagles lost to over the weekend at the West Texas March
Classic in Midland.

Pecos fell to Wylie, 8-4, then were blanked by Colorado
City, 12-0 before coming back to defeat Muleshoe, 13-3, and
raise their record to 8-5-1 on the season. Pecos and Clint
currently are the only two district schools with winning
record, but the Lions closed out tournament play in Midland
with an 8-6 win over Colorado City, after beating Muleshoe,
14-4.

Fabens was in Alpine this past weekend, where they defeated
a couple of Class 2A schools, Wall and Van Horn, around a
loss to Presidio. The 2-1 mark at the Alpine Tournament left
Fabens with a 5-6 record on the season.

Saturday's win by the Eagles was the first game this season
in which Pecos did not allow an unearned run, and Williams
said the Eagles will have to play good defense tonight
against Fabens.

They've got some quick kids and they like to slap at the
ball. They make good contact," he said.

Fabens gets back several pitchers from last year, including
all-district pick Luis Chavez, Tony Chavez and Jaime
Valenzuela. Along with winning consolation at Alpine, the
Wildcats also took third place at the Lower Valley Classic
in Clint the previous weekend.
