Prieto is speaker at BPW meeting

Lydia Prieto, Tax Asessor-Collector for Pecos-Barstow-Toyah
ISD, Reeves County Hospital District and Town of Pecos City,
was guest spekaer at the noon meeting, Feb. 23, of the Pecos
Business and Professional Woman's Club. Prieto was
introduced by Gretchen Luna, vice president and program
chairman.

Prieto told of the various duties of her office and told the
group how much she enjoys working with the public and the
challenges she faces each day. Born in Monahans she attended
schools in Barstow, Toyah and Pecos. She enjoys her
association with employees of the Appraisal District and
other taxing entities.

It is her duty to calculate an effective tax rate each year
after the appraisal phase is completed and the Appraisal
Review board has met. Any tax increases are published prior
to adoption. After the tax rate has been adopted statements
are sent to the tax payors.

The hardest part of her job is working with delinquent tax
payors who have been given every opportuni9ty to pay-out
their delinquent taxes and have failed to do so. The
property is then sold at tax sales by the delinquent tax
attorneys. Prieto says that this is upsetting because she
doesn't like to see anyone lose their property.

The meeting was conducted by President Lucila Valenzuela.

Gail Norris and Janet Martinez were welcomed as new members.

Rodeo brands and sponsor page assignments were handed out to
all members. Contact for renewals need to be made prior to
the March 15 deadline.

Members present were VaLera Gatewood, Jeannette Alligood,
Nell Maddux, Kathy Hurley, Linda Clark, Elfida Zuniga, Janet
Martinez, Catherine Travland, Luna and Valenzuela.

Next meeting will be March 9 at noon at the Quality Inn.
