Eagles need home victory over Wildcats

The Pecos Eagles will try to get back to the .500 mark in
District 2-4A boys basketball play tonight, when they host
the Fabens Wildcats in a 7:30 p.m. start.

The boys will follow the girls' home game against Fabens,
starting at 6 p.m., as the Eagles try for just their second
win in district this season.

Both Pecos teams come off 17-point losses on Friday at
Canutillo, the girls by a 51-34 score and the boys by a
54-37 margin. Last month in Fabens, the girls were edged out
by the Wildcats, 51-45, while the boys held on for a 63-59
victory.

Although the Eagles come into the game with only a 1-6
record in district, coach Brian Williams said Pecos can
still improve on last year's record with wins in two of
their final three games.

"Our goal right now is to beat last year's team record of
two district wins," he said. "That would be an improvement,
and I'm looking for any positive thing right now."

Pecos plays their final road game at Clint on Friday, then
closes the season by hosting San Elizario, who they beat two
weeks ago.

Pecos' boys are 2-3 in district and need a win tonight over
the 0-5 Wildcats, whom they beat despite blowing a 17-point
lead in the fourth quarter back on Jan. 15.

On Friday, the Eagles were within a point of Canutillo
midway through the second period when they stopped moving on
offense and defense and were outscored, 33-17, the rest of
the way.

"If they don't suck it up, they're going to sneak up on
us," Eagles' coach Mike Sadler said of the Wildcats, who
have come close to winning in all their district games so
far.

At 2-3 in district, the Eagles are tied with Canutillo for
fourth place in the standings, and need to win their three
home games in the second half of 2-4A play to have a shot at
their first playoff spot since 1990. San Elizario and
Canutillo are Pecos' other home opponents in the second half
of the district schedule.
