Modern Study holds first club meeting


A "kick-off" meeting for the new club year was held by The
Modern Study Club at 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 9, in the
parlor of the First Christian Church, 423 S. Elm.

President Lena Harpham welcomed members, presented yearbooks
and gave an overview of the club year's programs and
projects. Quote for the gathering was "A New Beginning, What
a Beautiful Morning, What a Beautiful Day god has Made."
Harpham's course of study is "Expanding Our Minds and
Building for the Future."

The Club Collect was led by Joyce Morton. The pledges to the
United States of America Flag and the Texas Flag were led by
Catherine Travland, as the members repeated with her, in
unison.

The minutes of the previous meeting was read by Bobbi Lang,
secretary and Pearl Gustafson, treasurer, presented a report
of club finances.

Margie Williamson, Scholarship Committee, reported that
Jamie Corson, who received The Modern Study Club Senior
Scholarship for 1998, is enrolled and attending Angelo State
University.

Etta Sullivan, chairman of the budget committee, presented
the budget for 1998-1999.

Members voted to send a memorial to the Western District
Alma Van Sickle Scholarship Fund in honor of Vivian Hudson,
a 50-year membr of The Modern Study Club, of Western
District of The Texas Federation of Women's Clubs, who
passed away Aug. 31, 1998 in Odessa. During the time of
discussion honoring long time members it was also voted that
Norine Hoover would be honored. She was named a lifetime
member of the Club.

The Modern Study Club members again voted to participate in
Operation Smile. Club members will donate whatever amount
they wish to give on April 28, 1999.

Roll call was answered with the name of a prospective member.

A lovely garden motif of floral birdhouses centered the
serving table. Hostesses Doris Moorman and Margie Williamson
provided delicious refreshments to members Hazel Barmore,
Nan Cate, Pearl Gustafson, Lena Harpham, Bobbi Lang, Joyce
Morton, Betty Smith, Phyllis Stoole, Etta Sullivan, Kay
Taylor, Laura Teal and Catherine Travland.
