News from Oasis of West Texas

The Oasis of West Texas Labor Day Festival was a great
success. It was attended by well over 500 people. The
following is a list of the days contest winners.

Watermelon seed spitting contest winners, girls division,
first place Mandy Gonzales-Levelland, Tx., boys division,
first place, Orlando Sanchez-Balmorhea.

Women's Washer Pitching: first place, Elizabeth Lozano and
Billie Ray Lozano; second place, Amanda Garcia and Jennifer
Leyva and third place, Billie Faye Garcia and Betty Offett.

Mens Washer Pitching: first place, Abelardo Gonzales and
Elias Dutchover; second place, Richard Olivas and Joe
Dominguez and third place, Juan Esparza and Aaron Zuniga.

There were four teams entered in the frijole bean cookoff
and three entered in the brisket division. Both were judged
on aroma, appearance, tenderness and taste. Judges were
Herman Tarin, Louis Frazor and Gilbert Galindo, all of
Balmorhea. Manny Hernandez from El Paso and Inez Mendez, of
Las Cruces, N.M.

It was a close contest in the bean division, having a tie
that sent the judges back for a second taste. First place in
frijole cookoff was Dutchovers of Balmorhea. Second place
went to The Outsiders of Odessa and third was Joe Abel
Rodriguez of Balmorhea.

In the brisket cookoff first place went to the Baeza family
of Pecos. Second was Joe Abel Rodriguez of Balmorhea and
third went to Los Frijoleros of Balmorhea.

Winners in both divisions received trophies and cash awards.

Balmorhea Bears are off this week. The junior high had a
blue and white scrimmage Thursday night with the blue
winning 19 to 16. Blue team was coached by Abel Garcia while
the white teams was coached by Adolfo Garcia.

Girls volleyball varsity and junior high teams played Sierra
Blanca on Tuesday. Junior high won with scores of 15-9,
12-15 and 15-13. Varsity swept over the Lady Vaqueros with
scores of 15-13 and 15-5.

Varsity is playing in the Marfa Tournament this weekend.
