Lobos open season with Snyder

Larry Hanna's Big Green Lobo team, a favorite in tough
4-3A, opens with powerful 4A Snyder in the first game of
the 1998 prep football season at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Snyder.

"Some kids are going to have to come in and play," says
Hanna, "due to some key injuries. It's an opportuity for
greatness for our kids to overcome the challenge "

Hanna says the offense will be at or near the level which
the Lobo defense has been playing since pads first popped in
early August.

"We spent this week picking apart the Snyder defense," says
the coach. "So far this week, we've had three great
practices both on offense and defense."

In the Pecos scrimmage on Friday, Aug. 21, the offense
showed it was beginning to mature. Offensive and defensive
Lobo teams each scored in the practice in Pecos.

It is the defense on which the Lobo mentor must depend
initially.

Last year's District Most Valuable Defense Player Roy Porras
returns at defensive end as does Brandon Lee, an all
district linebacker a last year.

The then sophomore had 115 tackles.Hanna says the offense,
which replaces all 11 starters, will mature on Friday.

Swim club tryouts Monday

Monahans Swim Club will hold tryouts on Monday Aug. 31 at
the high school swimming pool from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. All
children are welcome to join the swimming program. However,
the child must be able to swim two (2) lengths of the pool.

Lady Loboes thrill hometown crowd

The Monahans High School Lady Loboes thrilled the hometown
crowd this weekend with a strong showing in the 25th annual
Monahans Volleyball Tournament.

The Ladies kicked off tournament play on Friday against El
Paso Americas, defeating them handily in two sets, 15-9,
15-10.

The Monahans team split their next match with Ft. Stockton,
15-10, 13-15. Pool A, the group of teams that included the
Lady Loboes, consisted of three teams.

The final standings for the pool were: Monahans (3-1), Ft.
Stockton (3-1), and El Paso Americas (0-4).

The women initiated the attack Saturday morning in the
Championship Bracket, defeating district foe Presidio 15-5,
15-8.

In the next round, semifinals, Denver City was disposed to
be a quickly, succumbing to the Ladies 15-8, 15-10.

The Lady Loboes were now in the Championship Match, one win
away from returning the trophy and title to Monahans.

The scheduling for the tournament had gone awry long
beforehand.

This placed the championship match much later in the evening
than originally planned.

In front of a supportive faction, the Lady Loboes fell short
of the championship, falling in three sets: 6-15, 16-14,
and 7-15.

The Ladies did Monahans proud, however, by competing so
strongly in a field with bigger teams from bigger schools.

The Lady Loboes take the court in the Pecos Tournament this
coming weekend, and battle Ft. Davis and Colorado City on
Tuesday, September 1st.
