Fowler seeks spot on UTEP squad
Pecos--Former Pecos Eagle lineman Jake Fowler is beginning a tryout today with the University of Texas-El Paso, hoping tomake enough of an impression on the Miners' coaching staff
to earn a spot on this fall's football team.
"They only invite a few freshmen to walkon for two-a-days,"
said Fowler. "They said if I could prove myself, I could get
a scholarship in December."

earned second team all-district honors for Pecos during his
senior season, then won the District 4-4A title in both the
discus and shot put in April at the 4-4A track meet in San
Angelo. At UTEP, he'll be trying to make the team as an
offensive tackle, where he played for most of his three
seasons on the Eagles' varsity
"I'm real excited about it," he said Friday. "It's getting
to where I can't sleep at night thinking about it."
Fowler will try to make a UTEP squad that had just 14
scholarships available for incoming freshman, and signed
just one offensive lineman as part of their 1998 recruting
class. The Miners will workout for the next four weeks,
before opening their season on Sept. 5 in Lubbock against
Texas Tech.
