Villescas family gathers for reunion


The descendants of the late Atilano and Catalina Villescas
gathered on July 3-4, for a family reunion. The festivities
took place at Saragosa Hall and Saragosa Park in Pecos.

Events on July 3, included registration and refreshments at
the residence of Michael and Irma Benavides along with a
golf tournament following registration.

A thanksgiving Mass at Santa Rosa de Lima Catholic Church
began the day on July 4, followed by a picnic at Saragosa
Park. Individual families were introduced followed by an
awards presentation and a talent show.

Entertainment music was provided by Juana Jaquez and her
Mariachi group. A barbecue dinner was served and D.J. Junja
Jams provided dance music. Menudo and all the fixings were
served during the dance.

Atilano Gonzales Villescas was born on Oct. 5, 1900 in
Lucerna, Tx. to the union of Pedro and Petronila Villescas.

Catalina Renteria Flores was born on Jan. 13, 1898, in
Candelaria, Tx. to the Dolores and Fernanda Flores. Atilano
and Catalina exchanged wedding vows at Santa Rosa de Lima
Catholic Church on Dec. 20, 1917 in Pecos.

They first made their home in Pecos where Atilano worked as
an agricultural laborer while Catalina was a housewife. They
began a family and later moved to Malaga, N.M. Atilano then
acquired some farming land in San Ignacio, Chihuahua, Mexico
and moved his family there. Atilano and Catalina decided to
move to Pecos, in 1952 due to better agricultural
opportunities and made Pecos their home. Atilano died on
Aug. 27, 1979 and Catalina Villescas died on Jan. 12, 1986.

Their children include: Teresa Cardona of El Paso; Micaela
Cazares, (deceased); Pedro Villescas of El Paso; Anita
Maldonado of Milliken, Colo.; Nicomedes Villescas
(deceased); Lorenzo Villescas of Pecos; Dolores Villescas of
Pecos; Leonila Valenzuela (deceased); Catalina "Katie"
Levario of Pecos and Atilano Villescas Jr. of Pecos.

About 200 family members and descendants of Atilano and
Catalina Villescas had the opportunity to attend the
reunion. Those attending include families from Anchorage,
Alaska; Bakersfield, San Diego, Stockton, Merced and 29
Palms, California; Berthoud, Johnstown, Colorado Springs and
Milliken, Colorado; Tucson, Tempe and Chandler, Arizona; El
Paso, Grand Prairie, San Antonio, Irving, Houston,
Harlingen, Santa Maria, Odessa, Richmond, Watauga and Pecos,
Texas.
