W.T.S.S. holds first annual picnic

Over 250 West Texas State School (WTSS) staff and their
families gathered at Pyote Park on a recent Saturday for the
first annual Awards Picnic. Each family brought food and
desserts to complement a variety of meats barbecued by the
Food Service staff.

Facility youth and their Industrial Arts teacher constructed
a series of 16 colorful, plywood kid cutout figures. They
represented the unity and interdependence of staff from each
dorm and department at the facility. Each was signed by
staff from those particular areas. The figures were arranged
in a semicircle and provided an arena for the presentation
of tenure and achievement awards to staff members.

Ed White, (right) assistant deputy director of management
support for TYC from Austin was a special guest for the
event. Here he is pictured with Mary Ann Box (center),
employee of the year, and Acting Facility Administrator Mary
Taggart.

White expressed the agency's appreciation for the fine work
done by the staff at WTSS. He expressed his feeling that
each day is a gift that the staff have to use as they will
in working with others. He felt WTSS staff had used their
time well in working with TYC youth and each other.

White was assisted by Taggart and Sheree Custred, WTSS
psychologist, in presenting the range of tenure and
achievement awards to numerous staff. Mary Ann Box of Pecos,
a WTSS teacher was chosen as Employee of the Year by her
peers and received a plaque.

After the meal and ceremonies, everyone had an opportunity
to enjoy themselves in a variety of contests and races for
all ages, complete with prizes for winners. A DJ added to
the merriment with recorded music. The nearby Pyote swimming
pool offered a cool respite from the afternoon heat for
those who wished to swim.

There was unanimous agreement that the Awards Picnic was a
grand success. The message on the large banner displayed at
the picnic area was synonymous with the feelings of all
gathered, "WTSS -- Working Together, Standing Strong."
