Fierro selected officer of month

Victor Fierro has been selected as Correctional Officer of
the Month for June 1998.

Fierro has been employed at the Reeves County Detention
Center since July 15, 1993.

He started as a correctional officer, his job consisting of
being responsible for the custody and control of all inmates
within his duty station and was required to perform other
duties which were critical to the security of the
institution.

He has now advanced to the position of Correctional
Counselor and is taking care of the inmate day to day
problems as well as other duties, according to RCDC Warden
Rudy Franco.

Fierro is married to Elizabeth Fierro and is the proud
father of two boys.

"He is a very dedicated, responsible and hard working
individual and has been an asset to the Reeves County
Detention Center," said Franco.

Children need a lot of water

Parents need to make sure children have plenty of water when
they venture outside in the sweltering heat this summer.

"Kids can become dehydrated very quickly," said Dr. Robert
Shulman, professor of pediatrics at Baylor College of
Medicine and director of the nutritional support team at
Texas Children's Hospital in Houston.

In addition to water, sports drinks and fruits juices are
also good to give children. It is best to stay away from
drinks that contain high levels of caffeine. Caffeine is
known to increase the flow of urine, so instead of
replenishing the body, it can contribute to dehydration.
Dehydration can cause a child to become dizzy or drowsy,
develope headaches and a dry mouth, and in severe cases
become unconscious.

Keep in mind, infants should never be exposed to the sun for
long periods of time, and never placed in direct sunlight.
Always dress them in light-colored clothing and put a hat on
their head. A light blanket cna also protect their arms and
legs.
