Summer tennis program still available

Pecos Eagles' tennis coach Bernadette Ornelas is trying out
some new workout strategies this year, as part of the
Pecos-Barstow-Toyah summer tennis program.

Ornelas said she has about 49 boys and girls participating
in this year's program, the first session of which reaches
its midpoint today at the Pecos High School tennis courts.

"We're playing new games like scoop-it-up to get the kids
interested in tennis," she said Thursday while working with
4th through 6th graders. "They also have summer leagues.
There's one in Midland through the USTA that helps teach
kids at an early age about playing tennis, and they also
have that Highway 80 Tournament.

"Eventually, I'm looking forward to our kids playing against
the other teams," Ornelas said.

The USTA donated 75 tennis racquets to P-B-T schools earlier
this year, and some are being used in the summer program.

"Most of the kids are bringing their own racquets, but if a
kid is unable to buy one, we let them borrow one of the USTA
racquets," Ornelas said. "I don't want to limit the number
of kids who can participate. I want to have as many kids as
possible."

She said the 4th through 6th grade group has the most
students this summer, about 20, while there are about a
dozen in the younger age group and in the junior high
division, and seven in the high school bracket.

Ornelas said she is still accepting entries for the first
session, which runs through Friday, while the second summer
tennis class opens on June 18 and runs through June 29, both
at the PHS tennis courts. Registration for that session will
be on June 18 and is $5 per student, $8 for two and $10 for
three or more in a family.
