Pena named award winner


The United States Achievement Academy announced that D'Andra
Pena of Barstow, has been named a United States National
Honor Roll Award winner.

Pena, who attends Zavala Middle School, will appear in the
United States Achievement Academy Official Yearbook, which
is published nationally.

"Recognizing and supporting our youth is more important than
ever before in America's history. Certainly, United States
Achievement Academy winners should be congratulated and
appreciated for their dedication to excellence and
achievement," said Dr. George Stevens, Executive Director of
the United states Achievement Academy.

The USAA National Honor Roll Awards provide honor roll
students with many benefits and services and is a great
tribute to a student's dedication, talent, and ability.

Pena is the daughter of Daniel and Lydia Pena of Barstow.

Grandparents are Jose and Frances Castillo of Pecos and
Emilio and Pauline Pena of Wickett.

Scholars named


Anthony Lopez and Billy Rodriguez, have been selected to
receive the Frank Kelley Memorial Lions Club scholarsips
this year.

Making the presentation last week was Paul Hinojos and Lions
President Richard Crider was on hand for the special event.
Each received a $1,000 scholarship.

100TH birthday celebration


Mae Weisiger celebrated her 100th birthday recently at the
Pecos Nursing Home. Her daughter, Billie Rogers, was on hand
for the celebration and provided the cake for the event.

Weisiger was born in Thorton and grew up in Mart, Tx. She
has one daughter, Billie Rogers; one granddaughter, Margaret
Percy of Ottawa, Canada and one grandson, Robert Frohlich of
Tahoe City, Calif.

Generous donation


Twentieth Century Club president Melissa Grote presented a
check to Carolyn Winkles, treasurer of the Pecos Tree Board.
The funds are used to plant trees in the Pecos community and
several have already been planted at the Greenwood Cemetery
earlier this year.
