Lady Lobos suffer 3-2 loss to Bowie in playoffs

SNYDER, May 14, 1998 - The Lady Loboes softball season came
to a halt suddenly at the hands of the Bowie Rabbits 3-2 in
Snyder.

Monahans faced Bowie pitcher Katie O'Neal who racked up 14
strike outs and gave up only one earned run and one walk.
"I was shocked because I felt like we could have beat
them... or should have beat them," said Stacy Sotelo.

"We faced a tough pitcher. We couldn't adjust to her. Our
defense was awsome we didn't let them blow us away. We hung
in there till the end."

"I felt pretty confidant," said Kacey Huckabee. "It was an
unexpected loss. We had them then in that one inning they
got us."

The Loboes started off with a one run first inning, blanking
the rabbits.

The Lady Lobes held off Bowie for two more innings until the
fourth where the tieing run was walked in.

In the fifth, the Rabbits bats came alive, scoring two runs
off three hits and a walk to take a 3-1 lead.

Monahans struggled back in the top half of the sixth scoring
a run to come within one.

However, with two on and two out the rally ended with a pick
off at third base.

In the seventh O'Neal struck out the first two batter and
the third popped out to short to end the game and the Loboes
run through the playoffs 3-2.

"With what we faced all year we did tremendously against a
pitcher like this," said coach Becky Melius. "Our district
does not prepare us for the play offs. Bowie is an
exceptional fundamentally sound team. Our girls did what was
asked of them. We just fell a little short."
