OPINIONMay 14, 1998Honoring our VeteransMonahans, May 14, 1998 - To all the citizens of Ward County. I would like to invite them to the Memorial Service for the Veterans who died or were killed in the armed forces during all the wars the USA has been involved in. We will honor all veterans and those who served our country, but this service will be to honor those who died in action while in the service of our country. "Sacrifice is meaningless without remembrance. America's collective consciousness demands that all citizens recall and be aware of the deaths of their fellow countrymen during wartime," said John E. Moon, National Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The service will be conducted by members of the American Legion, the VFW and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. Service will begin at 10 a.m. May 25 at the Monahans Memorial Cemetery. Cold drinks and water will be available. Bring your lawn chairs and umbrellas. Anyone who would like to volunteer to help on the program will be greatly appreciated. Call me at 389-5609 in Pyote after May 20th as I will be out of town until then. James Lamothe News gets pat on backMonahans, May 14, 1998 - We felt it necessary to write a letter of gratitude for the coverage the Monahans Chamber of Commerce has been receiving recently. A member of the newspaper staff has made a very noticeable effort to attend, take pictures, and cover all of the recent events sponsored by the Chamber. This may sound like an easy task, but the community may not realize how many events the Chamber has sponsored in one month's time: April 1 Juice the Moose visited Monahans April 9 hung Welcome to Monahans Banners (with the aid of Classic Cable) April 10 Monahans Community Night at the Angels game, April 14 Mayor designated May as Clean-Up month, April 17-18 welcomed visitors to Monahans for the district 3-AAA meets, April 21 Monahans Motel ribbon cutting, April 24 ribbon cutting Ace Hardware Lumber Yard, April 25 welcomed drivers as the participated in the Bus Road-E-O, April 30 hosted a luncheon for UTPB, May 2 City Wide Garage Sale, May 4-9 Beautify Monahans Campaign, May 5 Chamber Prayer Breakfast, and May 6 ribbon cutting for Farm Bureau Insurance. As you can see covering the Chamber is not as easy as it sounds. It is apparent the newspaper staff has made great efforts to improve the articles, coverage and appearance of OUR weekly paper. Coverage of Chamber news and events is important to the community, as we (the Chamber board & staff) strive to the commitment we have made, "To preserve and continue to improve the economic and social well-being of our community". So Mr. McKinnon please take the time out of your busy schedule to hold your head high while you pat the backs of your deserving employees We would also like to take this opportunity to WELCOME Joe Warren, the new publisher of the Monahans News. If there is ever any way we can be of assistance to you or
Thank you again for all of your time and consideration!
