Doubles team headed for the big show

Monahans, May 7, 1998 - Monahans tennis has done the unexpected all year
long. In team play the Loboes shocked the tennis world by taking the
high road to the state finals.

In singles play the Loboes expected to send a few to state. The
suprise, even to doubles team mates Christina Wilbur and Sandra Molinar,
was that it was in girls doubles.

"We were the underdogs," said both Wilbur and Molinar. "We had nothing
to lose."

(The doubles team was so close they did the interview together.)

"We were just playing and we won 6-3. Then we tensed up because we felt
like we might win. That is when we lost 6-2. Then they had the momentum
and won the last set 6-3."

Head Coach Justin Quest feel the ladies have a fair chance to win a
title.

"I think they will do good," said Quest. "We are coming out of one of
the toughest region in the state."

In a heart breaking loss, senior Joanna Cupp was knocked out of the
running by dropping the championship match to Seminole's Christy Mares
6-4, 6-2 and a hard fought loss to Breckenridge's Sarah Everett 6-3, 6-2.

"I'm dispappointed," said Cupp. "I wanted to go . I was was just
physically tapped out. I am proud of how I played this year and I am
thankful to my coach. He kept me motivated all year; I couldn't have
gotten this far with out him. I wanted to win not only for me but for
him too."

Two seniors have high hopes for state

Monahans, May 7, 1998 - The Lobo track team will send Seniors Quint
Melius and Robin Hanna to the state meet to be held in Austin May 15-16.

Melius scored a 56 1/4 foot on shot put to take second in the regional
tournament with a shot at a state title.

"I look forward to throwing against some of these guys to see where I am
in the state," said Melius. "I think I got just as good a chance as
anyone. Who ever is on top of their game in Austin will take it away."

Hanna competed in five events in the regional meet, but will go to state
in only the 110 hurdles.

"I didn't do as good as I wanted to in a couple of events," said Hanna.
"Over all I feel pretty good about the meet. We accomplished lots of
goals to come this far and we hope for a good outcome in two weeks."
