Hughes featured in newspaper


Robert Hughes, 59, a former Pecos resident, was recently
featured in the Dallas Business Journal.

The article, was titled "Around the Metroplex: A look at
movers and shakers of the Metroplex - and what makes them
tick."

Hughes is founder of Robert Hughes Associates, a
Dallas-based insurance consulting firm.

He and his wife, Harriet, have been married for 38 years.
The couple have a son, Jim, and a daughter, Alice, plus
their spouses and two grandchildren.

Hughes attended Southern Methodist University, with a major
in insurance.

Hughes started out in the insurance agency business after
graduating from SMU. He returned to Pecos and worked at the
family-owned business - Hughes Insurance Agency which he
eventually bought.

In 1972 he went back to Dallas, where he worked in
consulting for Rimco. After six years, he wanted to start
his own company, so we formed Robert Hughes Associates in
1979.

He and his wife have traveled all over the world, including
Portugal, Spain and England.

Spelling winner advances


Sixth grader Erica Caballero participated in the Regional
Spelling Bee in Odessa held recently, after she won the
event at Lamar Middle School. Caballero advanced to the
fourth round at regionals before being eliminated.

OC offers Spanish class


Odessa College is offering a two-week Spanish class that
meets in Cuernavaca, Mexico, and offers students intensive
conversational practice. Students attend six hours of
classes daily at the Center for Bilingual Multicultural
Studies, and live with a Mexican family who speaks litte or
no English.

Tentatively scheduled for May 15-30, the course is for
beginning through advanced students will cost about $1,500.
The fee includes round-trip airfare, room and board, tuition
and books. The intensive Spanish practicum class may be
taken as a credit or non-credit course.

Cuernavaca, located approximately 50 minutes south of Mexico
City, is known as "The City of Eternal Spring," because of
its mild climate year round. Side trips to cultural points
of interest are planned.
