State Champs

Cowgirls win third power lifting title

KILLEEN - Grandfalls-Royalty High School's Cowgirls easily
won their third consecutive state power lifting championship
in Killeen on Saturday, March 28.

They won by 12 points in the 1-A competition that included
lifters from across the state in the University
Interscholastic League tournament.

Grandfalls tallied 33 points.

The total included four first place wins and one second
place. No Cowgirl power lifter finished lower than second in
her weight class.

Louise came closest to dethroning the defending champions
when it scored 21 points.

Coach Dwaine Lee congratulated the girls after their
unprecedented third consecutive state championship. That
effort has not been equalled by any recent Ward County high
school athletic teams, according to a check of the records
in both the Grandfalls-Royalty and Monahans-Wickett-Pyote
school districts.

Lee says he feels the team may have been a little nervous at
the beginning because they were lifting on the same platform
initially as the teams from the much larger 5A schools.

But, Lee says, the girls could see who they were lifting
against. They knew what they had to lift to win their state
championship and they did.

The three-peat factor?

The coach says he is extremely happy for the girls and he
does not think they realize how hard it is to win a state
championship in any sport, much less, winning it three years
in a row.

Senior Laura Porras, who lifts in the 105 pounds division,
has been a member of all three state champions. Junior
Stacey Miller, who lifts in the 148 pound division, has been
on the last two state championship lifting squads.
