Carbon monoxide safety topic at meeting

A Public Affairs Department program on fire and carbon
monoxide safety was presented to The Modern Study Club at
their last meeting in the fellowship hall of the First
Christian Church by representatives of the Pecos Fire
Department.

Doris Moorman, chair of the Public Affairs Department,
passed out brochures and introduced Jack Brookshire, who is
currently Pecos Fire Chief and Reeves County Fire Marshal
and a 19 year veteran of the department. Doug Cox, former
Pecos Fire Chief and a Pecos volunteer fireman for 23 years
was also on hand.

Chief Brookshire demonstrated that heat, fuel and oxygen
will cause combustion; showed several items that are highly
combustible; urged everyone to install smoke and carbon
monoxide detectors; buy a fire extinguisher, and concluded
by showing a film entitled, "Countdown to Disaster."

Former chief Cox gave a history of the local volunteer fire
department; named all the fire chiefs that have served Pecos
and Reeves County and told how the fire department is funded
by Town of Pecos City and Reeves County equally.

President Joyce Morton presided during the meeting. The club
collect and the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of the
United States of America was repeated in unison by those
attending, led by Nan Cate and Juracy McCall, respectively.

Catherine Ashley Travland, secretary, read the minutes of
the previous meeting and Juracy McCall, treasurer, reported
on club finances.

Members were reminded of the Annual Spring Convention of the
Western District of the Texas Federation of Women's Clubs
slated for Alpine on March 20-21. A report was given
concerning arts and crafts eligible for entry in the
competition in the art show to be held at the convention.

Nan Cate, Western District Resolutions Chairman, made
comments and members were reminded of donations for the MD
Anderson Research Center patients to be taken to the
gathering in Alpine. Instructions on items which are
appropriate were given.

The executive committee named Etta Sullivan, Pearl Gustafson
and Bobbi Lane to the nominating committee for the 1998-2000
club officers.

Roll call was answered with each member giving a Fire Safety
Precaution. Bi-monthly project emphasis for the meeting was
participation in Community Projects.

Hostesses Doris Moorman and Laura Teal served refreshments
to guests Jack and Keema Brookshire, Doug Cox, Steve
Brookshire, Gus Ybarra and 13 members.
