Harris named citizen of year

Billee Lou Harris, who went on from being Monahans High
School's first Homecoming Queen to become a civic and
business leader in Ward County, is the Chamber of Commerce's
1998 Citizen of the Year.
Jack Grant, last year's winner, presented the award to
Harris and said:
"She is continually dreaming of ways to make Monahans a
better place to live and work. But her efforts do not stop
at the dreaming stage. When Billee Lou has an idea, she gets
busy gathering support, recruiting volunteers and getting
the job done."
Terry Kirkland, incoming president of the Chamber, was given
the Youth Leadership Award. Max Johnson was the Youth
Leadership award winner in 1997. Main Street Monahans, whose
executive Suzi Blair has guided the downtown enhancement
group to state recognition in the past year, won the
Chamber's Merit Award. Last year's winner C. Pearson Cooper
presented that award to Main street.
The honors came at the forty-fifth annual membership and
awards banquet of the Chamber held on Saturday, Feb. 7, at
the Ward County Convention Center.
Billed as a night of mystic fun and keyed by magician Taylor
Keen, the children assisted Keen in his performance.
In his presentation to Harris, Grant noted only a few of her
accomplishments through the years: "the Chamber Board of
Directors. . .chair. . .of the Merchants Association . .
.with many others, formed the Monahans Main Street
Association and after untold hours of research, planning and
studying . . .she rallied the members . . .barrels were
planted, benches were set, wrought iron street signs were
put in place and downtown came alive! In 1996, Billee Lou
and her Main Street gang brought the first lighted Christmas
parade to downtown Monahans."

Moment of silence on agenda

School district administrators Monday, Feb. 9, were asked to
review the possibility of a formal "moment of silence" to
begin the day on the school district's campuses.
Board President Johnny White and board member Steve Hurst
said they did not want anyone to think there is a sectarian
motive in the request. And both noted that the "moment of
silence" at other campuses in other school districts had
been a successful focusing factor for students.
"This is a time for free thought for a student, a teacher,
an administrator to make this what ever it might be for
them." said White.
Said Hurst: "If you just take a minute and get your thoughts
together, nothing dictated, nothing set down. Take a moment,
a minute, maybe two, and focus. It just helps."
Clifton L. Stephens, superintendent of the
Monahans-Wickett-Pyote School district, told the board
members he saw no problems with adopting such a "moment of
silence" policy.
"We'll just do it," the superintendent told the board. "I'm
not opposed to it."
White instructed Stephens:
" Discuss it with your staff. See how this could be done."

Schools obtain grant

Monahans-Wickett-Pyote school district has a received a
government grant of $56,500 to provide computers in the high
school and junior high libraries that will link the
libraries to the internet.
Superintendent Clifton L. Stephens made the announcement at
the district trustees meeting on Monday. The dollars come
through the Telecommunications Infrastructure Fund Board
Says Stephens in a statement: "We are very pleased to
receive this award and need to give recognition to Loredia
Potts, Nancy Upchurch and Joe Hayes for their time and
effort spent in the actual grant application progress."

Two trustee seats on May 2 ballot

Members of the Monahans-Wickett-Pyote school district board
Monday, Feb. 9, set Saturday, May 2, for election of two
district trustees.
The elections are to be in Districts 2 and District 4.
