Exum, Crutchfield plan wedding

Mr. and Mrs. Silas M. Crutchfield, III, of The Woodlands
announce the engagement of their daughter, Lacey Ann
Crutchfield, to James Justin (J.J.) Exum, son of Rickey and
Jodi Exum, of Pecos.

The couple plans to marry Sept. 5, at the historic West of
the Pecos Museum in Pecos with Banky Stocks, of Midland,
officiating.

The bride-elect is a 1994 graduate of J.L. McCullough High
School in The Woodlands, and a December 1997 graduate of Sul
Ross State University in Alpine with a bachelor's degree in
Meat Industry Management. She is employed at Western Pension
Management in Midland.

The bridegroom is a 1994 graduate of Pecos High School and
is currently a senior at Sul Ross State University majoring
in Meat Industry Management. He is scheduled to receive his
bachelor's degree from SRSU in August, 1998.

Herbs topic of study club meeting

The program "A Garden of Herbs," which included tips of
growing herbs as well as their uses for health and cooking,
was presented by Gretchen Luna to members of The Modern
Study Club at their regular bi-monthly meeting held Jan. 28,
in the fellowship hall of the Calvary Baptist Church.
Several pertinent books were displayed for consideration as
well as a variety of herbs, which were viewed and smelled.
Luna urged those present to use more herbs and spices and
cut down on salt.

The call to order was given by President Joyce Morton. The
Pledge of Allegiance to the United States of America was
repeated in unison. The club collect was led by Pearl
Gustafson as all members joined in the recitation.

Catherine Travland, secretary, read the minutes of the
previous meeting and Juracy McCall, treasurer, reported on
club finances.

After discussion club members voted to contribute $20 to
Special Olympics out of the general cushion fund and to
budget support of that special cause for 1998-1999.

Margie Williamson, scholarship chairman, reported that Jamie
Corson had been chosen as our candidate for competition for
the Western District, Alma Van Sickle Scholarship that will
be awarded at the Spring Convention in Alpine.

Reports that were due to Western District on Feb. 1, were
discussed and final plans were made to meet the deadline.

Phyllis Stool, federation chairman, told of the TFWC,
1998-2000 candidates for state office as follows: Marion
Gamertsfelder, president; Mary Beth Guy, president-elect;
Bobbe Mitchell, first vice-president from Western District;
Janoma Stephens, second vice-president; and Barbara
Winingham, second vice-president. Stool urged all club
members to read their bios in "The Texas Clubwoman."

Stool, also reminded members that their "Smile" offerings
would be due in April and that she hopes that this club will
exceed the amount of $240 which was the amount donated last
year. Stool chairs the local "Operation Smile," a care
giving, health care organization working in many countries.

Roll call was answered by naming a recipe using a particular
herb. Copies of the recipes will be made and shared with
other members.

A report was given concerning the illness of club members,
spouses and friends.

Hostesses Hazel Barmore, Laura Teal and Bobbi Lang served 12
members and one guest, Sib Higginbotham, delicious
refreshments.

The next meeting will be on Americanism, chaired by Pearl
Gustafson, at the First Presbyterian Church fellowship hall.

Couple announce birth of son

Erica Marie Gutierrez and Ruben Ramirez, of Austin, are the
proud new parents of their son, Dante Xavier Ramirez.

Little Dante was born at 11:30 p.m. on Feb. 12, 1998, at
Seton Medical Center in Austin, weighing in at six pounds,
12 ounces and was 19 inches long.

Maternal grandparents are James and Nova Ann Herrera, and
paternal grandparents are Ruben and Irma Ramirez, all of
Pecos. Maternal great-grandmother is Petra Gutierrez, also
of Pecos.
