Snow affects agriculture in many ways

By GREG HARMAN
Staff Writer

PECOS, December 29, 1997 - As the thrill and shock of winter's whiteness fades from area residents, the pros and cons of a December snow come under debate.

Just as cold weather is compounded by moisture in its effect on people, the combination can affect livestock as well. C.W. Roberts, County Extension Agent - Agriculture, said that if the snow remained on the ground much longer, it could have had a detrimental affect on the many thin cattle in the area.

He also warned that the increased moisture of recent months had not gotten Pecos out of the current drought, "not by a long ways."

This is the first time in five or six years that there has been moisture on the ground in December.

"If this precipitation continues," said Roberts, "the sub-soil moisture may start growing winter weeds that will help feed the cattle until spring."

At Coyanosa Co-op Cotton Gin, the bulk of the cotton is already in, though there are a couple farmers still harvesting. The manager at the Coyanosa gin, Gail Fritter, said that the freeze would not have much effect on the quality or sale value of the cotton.
