Monahans boxer fights to championship

MIDLAND - Cris Molina, a 26-year-old light heavyweight from
Monahans, fought his way to the championship in his division
at the Midland Box-Off on Saturday, Dec. 6, at the Lions
Club Center.

He decisioned Mike Martinez of Snyder in a unanimous vote of
the judges.
Both Martinez and Molina, who fights under the umbrella of
the Barstow/Pecos Warbirds, came into the amateur match at
178 pounds.

Next stop for Molina is the state regional round of the USA
championships in McKinney at a date to be determined in
January.

"I'll be fighting then as a heavyweight," says the boxer who
trains on his own and who fights through the Warbirds.

In the three round amateur bout with Martinez, Molina
stunned his opponent hard and often but not enough to bring
him down with a knockout which the Monahans boxer wanted.
Molina attacked from the opening bell until the referee
raised his hand in victory.

"He was fighting defensively and moving back," says Molina.
"I couldn't unload on him the way I would have liked."

Molina's bouts are sponsored by Moore Transportation, Lalo's
Carpet and Tile and Moe Molina.

The Ward County fighter says he could not pursue his amateur
career without their help in paying the travel expenses and
other costs involved.

Pecos forces turnovers, rally past Monahans

PECOS - For the first 16 minutes of Tuesday night's, Dec. 9,
basketball game between the Pecos Eagles and Monahans
Loboes, it looked as though Lobo Coach John Curry had been
scouting the Eagles at last weekend's Odessa Hoopfest
Tournament.

But when things were over, it was the Eagles who were doing
to Monahans what Odessa Permian and El Paso Irvin had done
to them - using a full court press to get a lot of easy
baskets. Pecos took control on defense in the second half
and scored a 54-39 victory at the Pecos High School
Gymnasium.

The Eagles didn't press much in the opening periods while
the Loboes built as much as a seven point lead in the second
quarter, mostly on baskets off turnovers.

"It was by design," says Coach Mike Sadler of the Eagles
defensive game plan. "I didn't want to start out in the
press because I didn't know what they had coming back."

Sadler refers to the Eagles 58-52 season opening victory in
Monahans when several players, including guards Brandon
Stephens and Nathan Swarb, still were involved in football.

Says Sadler: "I figured they'd have some more quickness out
there and they did. Then after watching them, I thought we
could put the press on and make it work and it did."

Monahans was hampered by Cody Avary's foul problems. The
Lobo post had 22 points in the Nov. 18 loss to Pecos.
Tuesday night, the Lobo gunner managed only one first period
basket and finished with five points.
