Point droughts hamper Eagles to open 2004

For the Pecos Eagle girls, it was the third period. For the boys it was the second quarter. For both Eagle basketball teams, it was another offensive drought that sent them down to road losses to start 2004 on Friday and Saturday.

Pecos' girls ended a 13-day break in Crane, scoring only three points in the third period of a 49-29 loss to the Cranes. Meanwhile the Eagle boys, who were shut out in the fourth period of their final game of 2003, managed only two points in the second quarter of their first game of the new year on Saturday in Andrews, and saw a 13-13 tie with the Mustangs turn into a 36-15 halftime deficit, on the way to a 67-48 loss.

Friday's game was the first of a home-and-home series for Pecos' girls with Crane, and the host Cranes outscored the Eagles in all four quarters.

"We had about 40-41 turnovers," said Eagles' coach Veronica Valenzuela. "Not only that, but our offense couldn't buy a bucket. I think we were 1-for-12, 3-for-12 and 1-for-10 in the first three quarters."

Despite the poor shooting, Pecos managed to scored nine points in each of the opening periods, but still trailed 27-18 going into the third period. The three-point quarter allowed the Cranes to widen their margin to 35-21 going into the final eight minutes of play.

"As far as defense goes, they got 8-10 points off the fast break, because we weren't hustling back. I don't know if that was because we were off for so long, but I hope we do better on Tuesday," Valenzuela said.

Leslie Rodriguez had eight points to lead the Eagles, who are 3-11 going into their rematch with Crane (6-11) on Tuesday, which will also be the 2003-04 basketball season home opener for Pecos' girls.

Pecos' boys played almost the exact same game against Andrews on Saturday as they did at home back in November, falling apart on offense in the second quarter after going into the period tied with the Mustangs.

"We just struggled again in the second quarter. We had a lot of unforced turnovers and missed a couple of jumpers, and it just got Andrews going," said Eagles' coach Joe Flores. "In a 3-4 minute span Andrews hit three 3-pointers and that separated them from us in the game right there."

Andrews' lead would grow to 52-21 after three periods, before Pecos more than doubled their point total in the fourth quarter.

"The 27 points was probably our best quarter of the year as far as our offense goes. We ran it well and did a lot of good things," Flores said. "At times we play well, but then at times we looked really bad."

Oscar Parada led the Eagles in scoring for the fourth straight game, this time with 16 points, while Justin Lara had 14. Kelvin Roberts, who had three of Andrews six 3-point baskets, led all scorers with 19 points.

The loss dropped Pecos to 6-10 on the season. The boys will also be home to Crane this week, but on Friday, while going to Big Spring on Tuesday night to face the Steers.
