Olusanya chosen as semifinalist
Pecos High School is pleased to announce that one of its students
has been named a semifinalist in this year's National Merit Scholarship
Award nominations.
This is a rare accomplishment, which is accorded to less than one
percent of the nations high school seniors.
The commended student is Olaide Olusanya, a senior who moved to
Pecos from Indiana last year.
He is the son of Dr. Oladele Olusanya, a family practice physician
here in Pecos.
His mother, Abimbola, a Nurse Practitioner, lives in California.
Olaide says he is very pleased with his recognition, which seems to
run in his family. His elder sister, Yetunde, currently a junior
pre-med student at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor was also a
National Merit Finalist.
Olaide loves computers and was part of the school team in UIL
Academics that went to State last year.
He is also co-editor of the school newspaper, and plays in the Pecos
Eagles tennis team. He loves to debate, and hopes to be a lawyer in the
future.
"I hope this award will encourage other students and parents in
Pecos to know that our school system is not bad at all, and that we can
produce students in our small town here in Pecos who can raise their
heads academically with the best of them from other parts of this
country," said Olusanya. "Personally, it would certainly encourage me
to work hard at the University of Texas, Austin campus, which I hope to
attend next year, to keep the Pecos banner flying high," he said.
