Pecos soldier now stationed in Germany
A Pecos soldier who had been serving his country in Iraq has
returned to a U.S. military base in Germany from the Persian Gulf.
Fernando Marta had been in the Gulf, in neighboring countries and in
Iraq for close to a year. He will now be stationed in Germany and be
reunited with his family, including his four-month-old son, Logan.
Little Logan was born in the United States on June 16, while his
father was out of the country.
Fernando Marta and Dana Warren met here in Pecos during high school.
Marta was two years older than Warren. The two were never more than
just friends throughout school, though.
Fernando joined the army immediately following high school
graduation in 1998. Dana had two years of high school left, though. The
two started dating in 2000, when Dana had graduated from high school.
The couple dated off and on for the next two years.
The couple married on June 22, 2002, at the Methodist Church here in
Pecos. They moved to Germany on July 14, where Fernando was stationed.
The Martas were together for about seven months. When Fernando was
stationed in Kuwait, and Dana moved back home.
"When he had to go to Kuwait, it was hard, but I knew we'd make it.
From Kuwait, he had to go to Iraq, and that is where he has been," said
Mrs. Marta.
Prior to Fernando being in Iraq, he was in Poland for a while. It
was there, that Fernando found out from his wife that he was going to
be a father.
Fernando was unable to be around for his wife's pregnancy, but was
still able to see how she was progressing through her pregnancy through
pictures sent to him.
Logan Matthew Marta was born on June 16, 2003. Fernando was unable
to be there for the birth of his son, but he rushed back home to see
his baby on June 20th.
At that time, Fernando was only able to be with his new family for
eight days before he had to go back to Iraq.
When Marta left for the first time to Iraq, they were told that it
would be a six month to a year deployment. This would have brought them
together in August. Later, they were told that he would be able to come
back no earlier than October and no later than January.
According to Mrs. Marta, the family will be in Germany for at least
two more years.
