Study club assists Safe Place with gifts
The Modern Study Club of Pecos held a delightful Home Life
Department program at their bi-monthly meeting held Oct. 8 in the home
of President Joyce Morton with Lena Harpham assisting her as hostess.
The meeting was a baby shower for Safe Place in Midland, planned by
Home Life Department Chairman, Etta Sullivan.
Nancy Betts, representing Safe Place, was on hand to open numerous
gifts given by club members, for the women and children of this shelter
for battered women, which has been in existence for more than 20 years.
The shelter can provide for as many as 64 women and children. Their
purpose goes beyond getting the women and children into a safe
environment. Through education, providing training for jobs and
developing the self-confidence they need to break the patterns of
unself-worth that have been programmed into them they are better
prepared to meet their future. The shelter personnel and supporters
provide school supplies and also see that the children receive the
support they need to continue school work and homework assignments
properly through the disruption they may be experiencing in their young
lives.
In a very casual setting, Mrs. Betts opened the gifts as she spoke
of the needs, the successes and the goals of this worthy establishment.
It was deemed one of the most exciting meetings held this year by
those who attended the meeting.
Roll call was answered by relating a fact addressing domestic
violence. Project emphasis for this meeting is the donation of The
Modern Study Club Scholarship to a Pecos High Senior, 2004.
During opening ceremonies and meeting, President Morton presided.
Pearl Gustafson led the Club Collect and Iris Reddick led the pledges
to the United States of America and Texas Flags, as those in attendance
repeated all in unison.
Paula Fuller, secretary, read the minutes of the previous meeting
and Mrs. Gustafson, treasurer, gave a statement of club finances.
The Modern Study Club meets the second and fourth Wednesdays of each
month and visitors are always welcome to study, enjoy friendships and
have an adventure now and then.
