Chavez, Terry capture medals at TAFF meet

Two of three Pecos athletes who competed in The Games of Texas over the weekend came away with medals from the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation's annual summer sports event.

Alexis Chavez placed third in the high jump in the Pee Wee Division, while Rashad Terry took second in the Senior Division of the 200 meter dash and was fourth in the 100 meters in the same division.

The Pee Wee Division is for 7-8 year olds, and Chavez cleared 2-foot-8 in the high jump, while placing 16th in the long jump, according to her mother, and Pecos Eagles girls track coach Roxie Chavez.

Chavez and Phillip Williams were the two members of the Pecos-Barstow-Toyah summer track program to earn berths at the TAAF state meet. Williams ran in the 11-12 division, and the Eagles' coach said, "Phillip finished fifth in his heat in the 100. He did real good considering the competition. The competition over there was so much better, because most of those kids do track all year long."

Terry competed in the Senior Division, one level up from where he ran at the area competition in Crane last month, and took second in the 200 meters with a 21.94 time, while placing fourth in the 100 with a 11.12 time. He was one-tenth of a second in back of winner Raven Hayward of Tyler, while Jordan Johnson of Friendship took the 200 with a time of 21.57.

Rec department holding leagues sign-ups

The Reeves County Community Sports and Recreation Department is registering boys and girls for its fall volleyball and flag football programs from now through late August.

The volleyball program is open to children entering grades 3-6, while the flag football league is for boys and girls ages 5 through 7. Registration cost for either program is $10 per player, and forms can be picked up at the recreation department office in the old Pecos High School gym during regular office hours.

Returned registration forms must be accompanied by a birth certificate and signatures of both parents. Deadline for signing up for volleyball is Aug. 23, while flag football sign-ups continue through Aug. 29. For further information, call the recreation department office at 447-9776.
