Opening times set for Pecos' softball squad

Pool round games and the first round game for Pecos' 12 and under girls softball team have been set for this weekend, at the West Texas All-Star Tournament at the Freddie Ezell (MUGS) Softball Complex at Ulmer Park in Midland.

The 12 and under squad will play two pool round games on Friday, and then will open tournament bracket play on Saturday, according to coach Debbie Garcia.

"We'll play at 3:15 p.m. against Sonora and at 6:15 p.m. against San Angelo Lake View," Garcia said. The pool games will be warm-ups for the opening round contest in the actual tournament, when the 12 and under team faces Midland Blue in an 11:30 a.m. match-up on Saturday.

Garcia said last week that the 12 and under girls placed second last month in a smaller tournament in Alpine, but one that featured several area teams that will be in the Midland tourney, including Monahans and Fort Stockton. Pecos' team is made up of players from the two 12-and-under teams that were part of the summer recreation league, which finished up play last Thursday.

Pecos was also supposed to have a team competing in the 14-and-under division at Midland this weekend, but Garcia said that group did not have enough players to field a full squad. "Some of those girls will be playing with a Fort Stockton team," in the Midland tournament, she added.

Pecos will be one of 68 teams competing in the tournament, which officially begins with opening ceremonies at noon on Friday.

Registration on Friday for new tumbling class

Jeremy Ray with Texas Tumbling will be at the Reeves County Community Sports and Recreation Department on Friday afternoon to sign up boys and girls age 3 and up for power tumbling and trampoline classes, to be held locally at the old Pecos High School gym.

The class will be one of two Ray is holding, with the other to take place at the Monahans Boys & Girls Club. The cost of the class is $25 per month for each child.

Ray, who conducted a tumbling demonstration and class in Pecos earlier this year, will be at the recreation department office at the old PHS gym to sign up boys and girls from 3 until 6 p.m. on Friday.

For further information, call Ray at 943-6440 or call the recreation department at 447-9776.
