Garcia returns from deployment

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Jesus Garcia, son of Hilario C. Garcia of Pecos, recently returned from a nine-month deployment while assigned to the amphibious assault ship USS Nassau, based in Norfolk, Va.

Garcia was one of more than 4,000 Atlantic Fleet Sailors and Marines deployed aboard the ships of the USS Nassau Amphibious Ready Group who participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

During this deployment, Garcia's ship supported the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit and participated in training humanitarian assistance and peace support operation in Spain, Italy, Kosovo, Kenya and Djibouti, Africa before patrolling the seas in the U.S. Forces Central Command area of responsibility.

USS Nassau supports amphibious operations using Landing Craft Air Cushions, which are specially designed hovercraft that deliver vehicles and equipments to the beach. The ship also has conventional landing craft and helicopters embarked, and is equipped with medical facilities staffed by Navy doctors, dentists, nurses and corpsmen.

Garcia is a 1999 graduate of Madison County High School of Madison, Fla. and joined the Navy in March 2000.
