Summer golf program gets good turnout
Young Pecos golfers have been getting in their swings the past two days
at the Crockett Junior High practice field, and will get a chance to do the
same thing next week at the Reeves County Golf Course, as part of the Pecos-Barstow-Toyah
ISD's summer golf program.
"We've got 80 kids signed up for this year," said Pecos High School girls
golf coach Tina Doan, who is supervising the summer program. "Most of them
are the younger ones. My biggest group is the third, fourth and fifth grade
group."
"We had a real good turnout for this session, and the kids seem to be
having a lot of fun," she added.
The kindergarten, first and second graders have their workouts first
each morning, and right now are just working on hitting the ball, both on
the ground and off tees. "With the younger ones, it's just hit it and go
get it," Doan said.
The younger golfers this morning were hitting balls out towards the irrigation
pipe laid across the Crockett field near the school's tennis courts, but
Doan said, "Starting Monday we'll practice at the golf course, and I plan
to have a little tournament in the future," for the program's students.
The summer golf program is scheduled to run mornings on Mondays through
Thursdays until the end of the month at the Reeves County Golf Course.
