Garcia signs McMurry swim scholarship
Pecos Eagles senior Gary Garcia has signed a letter of intent to attend
McMurry University on a swimming scholarship.
The senior signed a letter of intent on Tuesday to attend the Abilene
school on a partial scholarship. "It's a $14,000 scholarship," Garcia said,
which translates into $56,000 over four years. "He'll have to pay a little
bit of it," added Eagles' coach Terri Morse.
Garcia was a four-year member of the Eagles' swim team and the team captain
for the past two seasons. He competed in the 100-yard backstroke and the
200 individual medley, as well as on Pecos' relay teams during the 2002-03
season. Garcia advanced to state by winning the Region I-4A title in the
backstroke after placing second at district, and qualified for the Class
4A state finals.
He also was a member of the Eagles' 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle
relay teams, both of which placed first at the Region I-4A meet in Lubbock.
At the state finals in Austin, the 200 medley team finished sixth and the
200 freestyle squad placed eighth, with the members of both teams earning
first-team all-state honors.
