Huckabee, McClendon win Beau Jack top flight

The team of Dub Huckabee and Greg McClendon took home first place in the First Flight of the 2003 Beau Jack Invitational Golf Tournament, held on Saturday and Sunday at the Reeves County Golf Course.

Huckabee and McClendon, of Midland, shot a 142 in the double low-ball round on Sunday to score a one shot win over Ryan Thomas and Blanton Baker, who also shot 142 after shooting a 66 in the regular low-ball round on Saturday. Pecos golfers Ruben Baca, Jr., and Michael Baca took third place, shooting a 145 on Sunday to finish with a 212 score, while Sammy Jimenez and mike Claburn were fourth with a 64-150-214 score.

This year's tournament was smaller than in recent years, with only three flights and 37 teams. Of that, a total of 10 teams played in the First Flight, 13 in the Second Flight and 14 in the Third Flight.

Jesse Anchondo and Gilbert Herrera took first place in the second flight, shooting a 151 on Sunday after a 73 on Saturday to win with a 224 score, one stroke ahead of Mike Harrison and Jimmy Lassiter. They shot a 67 during the opening round of play and closed out with a 158 on Sunday.

Two teams tied for third, three strokes out of second place. Jim Painter and Michael Moore shot a 70-257-227, while Paul Hinojos and Gilbert Abila shot a 74-153-227.

The Third Flight also had a two-way tie for third place, while Bill Cooksey and Robert Vernor won first place, with a 77-159-236 score, five strokes ahead of Starkey Warren and Jerry Patterson, who scored 74-167-241. Tying for third were the teams of Danny and Daniel Hernandez and Bob Burkholder and Donny Bradley. They shot a 79-165-244, while the Hernandezes shot rounds of 76 and 168 for their 244 score.
