PHS golfers place in flights, earn scholarships at tourney

Four members of the Pecos Eagles' state runners-up golf team placed in four different flights over the weekend, playing with adult partners at the Ninth Annual Jim Trey Espt Memorial Adult/Youth Golf Scholarship Tournament in Alpine.

A total of 55 teams in seven flights competed in the tournament, and two senior members of the Eagles' girls golf team, along with one senior off Pecos' boys' golf team received $500 scholarships from the Jim Espy Scholarship Fund. Lauren Martinez and Brandi North, along with David Bradley, were three of the six players to receive the scholarships.

Martinez, who placed second individually at the Class 3A state tournament, played in the tournament's Championship Flight with Barry McCallister of Fort Stockton, brother of PGA golfer Blaine McCallister, and tied for fourth place with Jimmy and Brian Stephens of Fort Stockton in that division, which was won by Mike and Jeff Hensely of Van Horn. In the President's Flight, Sarah McKinney and Gaylon Doan tied for third place with Jim and Allison Pogue of Alpine. Cuco and Joseph Corrales of Van Horn took first place.

Wayne North and Brandi North tied for third in the First Flight, with Jerry and Caiti Carvajal of Alpine, while another Alpine team, of Brian Elliott and Colin Matthews, took first place. No Pecos golfers placed in the Second Flight, while in the third flight another member of the varsity golf team, freshman Shelly Martinez, took first place along with her father, Jimbo Martinez.

The other Pecos golfer to place was a junior high competitor in the Fifth Flight, where Eloy and Amanda Herrera took third place overall.

North, Shelly Martinez and Drake Bradley also the competition for longest drive in their divisions, Martinez and Bradley in the 13-15 year old girls and boys divisions and North in the 16-18 year old girls age group.
