Leyva selected as academy winner
Sinjin A. Leyva has been named a National Award Winner in history and government
by the United States Achievement Academy.
Leyva, a Carlsbad High School student, was nominated for the honor by
Donna A. Gonzalez, a history teacher at CHS.
His name will appear in the United States Achievement Academy Official
Yearbook, which is published nationally.
The award is presented to fewer than 10 percent of all American high
school students.
The academy selects USAA winners upon the recommendation of teachers,
coaches, counselors and other qualified sponsors and upon the Standards
of Selection set for by the Academy.
Criteria for selection include a student's academic performance, interest
and aptitude, leadership qualities, responsibilities, enthusiasm, motivation
to learn and improve, citizenship, attitude and cooperative spirit, dependability
and recommendation from a teacher or director.
Leyva is the son of Henry and Frances Leyva of Carlsbad and grandson
of Sulema Leyva of Odessa and the late Enrique Leyva and Felis Gonzales
of Pecos and the late Petra Gonzales.
