Lopez Homecoming Queen finalist

Miss Debbie Lopez, daughter of Rafael and Maribel Hernandez of Slaton, was selected as a finalist for Texas' 23rd Annual Homecoming Queen Selection, which was held April 5-6, at the Hyatt Regency Dallas Ft. Worth Airport in DFW Airport.

She is the granddaughter of Felipe and Liboria Lopez of Saragosa and the Slaton High School Homecoming Queen.

Texas' 2003 Homecoming Queen received a cash scholarship plus an expense paid trip to the National Finals to compete with queens from the other states for America's Homecoming Queen.

America's Homecoming Queen, Inc. is a non-profit organization promoting education, educational travel, and community service in schools in all 50 states.

Armendariz completes training

Army Pvt. Manuel R. Armendariz has graduated from One Station Unit Training (OSUT) at the U.S. Army Infantry School, Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. The training consisted of basic military training and advanced individual training (AIT).

During basic training, the trainee received instruction in drill and ceremonies, military customs and courtesies, map reading, tactics, basic rifle marksmanship, physical fitness, field training, and first aid. The recruit developed combat skills and handled various weapons available to the infantry soldier.

During AIT, the soldier received instruction to serve as an infantryman using light and heavy anti-armor weapons, indirect-fire support, and mechanized operations while assigned to a rifle or mortar squad. The training included weapons qualifications, tactics, patrolling, navigation, field communications, and combat operations; engagement in infantry combat exercises, battle drills, land mine locating, neutralizing and extracting, and survival operations during a nuclear, biological or chemical attack.

Armendariz is the son of Maria Florez of Pecos.

Book fair planned for Bessie Haynes

Bessie Haynes Elementary School is sponsoring a Scholastic Book Fair, beginning Monday, May 5, through Friday, May 9.

Hours will be from 8:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. and 1-3:30p.m. On May 9, hours will be 8:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m., in Room 11.

Come and view the wide selection of books, posters, cd roms and crafts.

Harry Potter merchandise will also be available.

Enrich your child's vocabulary, imagination and reading skills with books from the book fair.
