Garcia assigned to assault ship
Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Jesus Garcia, son of Hilario C.
Garcia, of Pecos, recently moved more than 2,200 Marines and equipment from
the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit to Kuwait while assigned
to the amphibious assault ship USS Nassau, based in Norfolk, Va.
Garcia is one of more than 4,000 Atlantic Fleet Sailors and Marines deployed
aboard the ships of the USS Nassau Amphibious Ready Group participating
in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
The USS Nassau has been deployed for more than seven months. During this
deployment, Garcia's ship participated in training, humanitarian and peace
support operations in Spain, Italy, Kosovo, Kenya and Djibouti, Africa.
USS Nassau supports amphibious operations using Landing Craft Air Cushions
(LCAC), which are specially designed hovercraft that deliver vehicles and
equipment to the beach. The ship also has conventional landing craft and
helicopters embarked, and is equipped with medical facilities staffed by
Navy doctors, dentists, nurses and corpsmen.
Garcia is a 1999 graduate of Madison County High School of Madison, Fla.
and joined the Navy in March 2000.
