Matta completes Basic training

Air Force Airman Carmen M. Matta has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio.

During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises, and special training in human relations.

In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community college of the Air Force.

She is the daughter of Sarah Vasquez of Pecos.

Matta is a 2002 graduate of Pecos High School.

Students invited to visit ASU

Angelo State University will host "College Days" on Saturday, Feb. 15, to provide the university, students and their families will be treated to a free lunch and will be offered complimentary tickets to the Rambelle and Ram basketball games that night against Texas A&M-Kingsville in the Junell Center/Stephens Arena.

Special information sessions also will be presented for students interested in ASU pre-professional programs, including nursing, physical therapy, pre-law and pre-health professions.

Throughout the event ASU faculty, staff and students will be available to welcome guests to campus and to answer their questions about all aspects of student life at ASU.

College Days Coordinator Bonnie Stennett said the event is an opportunity for prospective students to get acquainted with ASU, its faculty and the educational experience it offers. The school year's final College Days program is scheduled April 5.

Volunteers plan meeting

The Barstow Volunteer Fire Department will meet at 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 6, at the Barstow Community Center.

The group will meet every first Thursday of the month and all volunteers are urged to attend.
