Garcia finishes Navy's assault response work

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Jesus Garcia, son of Hilario C. Garcia of 908 S. Willow St., Pecos, Texas, recently completed Dynamic Response '02 while assigned to the amphibious assault ship USS Nassau, based in Norfolk, Va.

Garcia is one of more than 4,000 Atlantic Fleet sailors and Marines aboard the ships of the USS Nassau Amphibious Ready Group.

After transiting the Suez Canal from the Mediterranean Sea after its month-long operation in Kosovo (Dynamic Response '02) Garcia's ship shifted location from the U.S. Sixth Fleet Area of Responsibility to that of the U.S. Naval Forces Central Command/U.S. Fifth Fleet in the Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea Area.

USS Nassau supports amphibious operations using Landing Craft Air Cushions (LCACs), which are specially-designed Hovercraft that deliver vehicles and equipment to the beach. The ship also has conventional landing craft and helicopters embarked, and is equipped with medical facilities staffed by Navy doctors, dentists, nurses and corpsmen.

Garcia is a 1999 graduate of Madison County High School of Madison, Fla. and joined the Navy in March 2000.

Amistad exhibit on display at Ft. Davis

The museum of the Fort Davis National Historic Site is currently displaying photographer David Korte's new exhibit entitled "Visions of Amistad' through this Sunday, Dec. 8.

The exhibit, which features over 25 photographs in sepia tone, infrared, silver and color, depicts the magnificent and ever-changing landscape of the Amistad National Recreational Area in Del Rio and in the surrounding region.

Korte has worked full-time as a fine arts photographer since 1993 and his work has been exhibited throughout the United States. The photos in the current exhibit were taken while Korte was in residency at Amistad NRA in the park's Artist in Residency program in 1999.

The exhibition is funded by a grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts, and the photographs may be purchased.
