Eagles hunting 1st win of year in Odessa today

The Pecos Eagles' volleyball team will head back to Odessa for the second Tuesday in a row in hopes of getting their first victory of the 2002 season today, when they take on the Odessa Permian Panthers and Lubbock Estacado Matadors.

The Eagles did win a pool match over the weekend at the Monahans Sandhills Tournament, defeating another Lubbock-area school, Frenship. But in the regulation matches, the Eagles fell to the host Loboes and Seminole Maidens, leaving them at 0-4 for the first week of the season.

Pecos was playing minus middle hitter/blocker Jennifer Martinez, who sprained her ankle last Tuesday at Odessa High, and despite that, coach Becky Granado said she saw some signs of improvement from the matches with OHS and Alpine that opened the season.

"Our passing was much better than Tuesday, but our setting we still have to work on, and we just had too many missed serves," said Granado, whose team last year started off the season 4-15 before rebounding to earn their sixth straight playoff berth.

Granado said the Eagles fared better against Odessa Permian than Monahans back on Aug. 17, in their final pre-season scrimmage. But the Panthers came up with a 16-14, 15-7 win over Odessa High this past weekend in the Ector County ISD Tournament. That victory came in-between losses to Midland High and Denver City on Saturday.

Following today's matches, the Eagles will play their home openers on Friday, in pool round play at the Cantaloupe Classic. The Eagles will face Marfa, Fabens, Fort Hancock and Anthony in their pool round matches.
