Eagle football, volleyball teams beginning workouts

Practice gets underway on Monday for Pecos' varsity volleyball and football teams for the fall 2002 season.

Unlike recent years, both squads will have two weeks of workouts before their first scrimmage games. The girls volleyball teams will scrimmage at home on Aug. 16, and in Monahans on Aug. 17 before opening their 2002 season on Aug. 20 with a pair of matches in Odessa against Odessa High and Alpine.

The boys will hold their first scrimmage on Aug. 17 at home against El Paso Riverside, then go to Van Horn on Aug. 23 for scrimmages against former District 2-4A rival Fabens and Van Horn. Pecos' first regular season game will be on Sept. 6 in Alpine against the Bucks.

New head football coach Fred Carter said the Eagles would begin two-a-days for varsity, junior varsity and freshman teams at 7 a.m. on Monday, and then come back for an evening practice at 7 p.m. Assistant coach Elias Payan said two-a-days will only be held the first week of workouts, due to teacher in-service beginning on Aug. 12.

Coach Becky Granado said the two-a-days for the volleyball teams will be split up next week. Junior and senior players will practice in the mornings from 8 to 10 a.m., and in the evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. Sophomore volleyball players will workout from 10 a.m. until 12 noon, and then from 3 to 5 p.m. in the afternoon, while freshman will have two afternoon workouts, from 12 noon until 2 p.m. and then from 5 through 7 p.m.

All volleyball and football players will have to have their physical forms filled out by a doctor and returned to their coaches before they can begin preseason workouts.
