Three Pecos runners earn summer state track berths

Three Pecos runners are headed to Waco today, to compete in the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation's Summer State Track Meet, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at the Baylor University track complex next to Floyd Casey Stadium.

Rashad Terry, Jack Bradley and Allen Chappell qualified for the state meet last weekend in area competition at Crane. They'll join other West Texas runners and others from across the state in the two-day event, according to Dan Cook, who has worked with the runners this summer and will travel with them down to Waco.

During the summer months the boys traveled to Kermit, Monahans, and Odessa. However, the team then took three weeks off to make any final adjustments before competing in last weekend's meet, where the three qualified for state with either first or second place finishes.

Cook said Terry would run in two individual events and Bradley in one event at Waco, while both would be entered in the high jump and compete with a pair of Monahans runners in the 400 meter relay.

"They'll run with Richard Covington and Jimmy Wright in the 14-15 year old intermediate division," Cook said. Pecos' other runner, Chappell qualified in the 400-meter dash in the 16-17 year old division.

Terry received first place in his events, the high jump, 100-meter sprint, and 200-meter dash. Terry cleared 6-foot-1 to win the high jump, and finished with a time of 10.63 seconds on his 100-meter sprint and as well as a time of 22.4 seconds on his 200-meter dash.

Bradley finished second in the high jump with a jump of 5-foot-8 and first in the 110-high meter hurdles with a time of 15.3 seconds.

In the relay, Terry, Bradley, Covington and Wright came in first in the 400-meters with a time of 43.9 seconds.

The preliminaries in the running events will be Saturday afternoon, while the high jump will take place that morning and the running finals will be held Sunday afternoon.

The state qualifying meet at Crane was "basically this region with the exception of Lubbock. The teams from there have their own region," Cook said. Unlike the high school meets, the TAAF state and regional meets aren't divided into divisions based on population.

"Midland and Odessa had a lot of high school aged kids there," said Cook of the Crane meet. Of the towns in Pecos' new district, Monahans will have five competing at Waco, while Fort Stockton, Midland Greenwood and Presidio did not have anyone qualify for state. "Kermit just had some kids at the lower age group, they didn't have any in the high school divisions," he added.

"It will be a state meet atmosphere. There will be a large crowd and some good competition," Cook said.

Recreation dept. holding racquetball tourney

The Reeves County Community Sports and Recreation Department will hold a racquetball tournament on Aug 9-11 at the racquetball courts adjacent to the old Pecos High School gym.

The tournament is open to persons age 18 or older and will be a double-elimination format. Entry fee is $15 per player.

The rec department also is taking registrations for the fall volleyball and pee-wee football leagues. Deadline for volleyball sign-ups is Aug. 23, while sign-ups for football continue through Aug. 24. Both are open to girls and boys entering Grades 3-6 this year.

Enrollment is $10 per child for volleyball and $20 per player for football and forms can be picked up at the recreation department office in the old Pecos High School gym. A birth certificate must be provided and both parents must sign the registration form for the child to participate.

For further information on the racquetball tournament or the youth leagues, call the recreation department at 447-9776.
