Junior League meets to hold draft for 2002 season

The Pecos Junior League will be holding a meeting at 6 p.m. today at the Maxey Park baseball field for all 13 and 14-year-olds interested in participating in Junior League baseball this season.

All players and coaches must attend the meeting, Pecos Little League President Ismael Mendoza said, since there will be a player draft tonight by the coaches, with the 13 and 14-year-olds assigned to their respective teams.

Mendoza said the Little League will also hold a meeting this Saturday at Chano Prieto Field beginning at 1:30 p.m. to collect fundraising money collected from the league's recent candy sale, and to return any unsold candies at the time. That will be followed by a trio of inter-league All-Star games, with the `C' Division Phillies and Tigers combining to take on the Padres and Mariners at 4 p.m.; the `B' Division Diamonbacks and A's facing the Astros and Indians at 6 p.m. and the `A' division Dodgers, Padres and Cubs taking on the Yankees and Rangers' top players at 8 p.m.

Eagles place eight on all-district team

Eight members of the Pecos Eagles' baseball team were named to the first team All-District 2-4A team by the district coaches, while head coach Bubba Williams was named Coach of the Year after the Eagles went undefeated during the 2002 district season.

The team was selected two weeks ago and released following Pecos' elimination from the Class 4A playoffs by the Frenship Tigers this past weekend.

Eagles' senior catcher Mason Abila shared Most Valuable Player honors for District 2-4A with San Elizario senior Bo Solis, and the Eagles had three of the five pitchers named to the first team, in senior Richard Rodriguez and juniors Matthew Levario and Barney Rodriguez. Four other juniors were named to the first team _ infielder/outfielder Rigo Ramirez, outfielders Freddy Torres and David Elkins and designated hitter Joey Ortega, while the lone sophomore in Pecos' starting lineup, Oscar Parada, was a second team selection as an outfielder.
