Former Eagles on conference baseball team

Two former Pecos Eagle baseball players were selected to the Texas-American Southwest Conference Baseball All-Conference team as juniors playing for Howard Payne University in Brownwood.

Third baseman Richard Gutierrez and outfielder Oscar Luna were both named to the West Division All-Conference squad and to the combined East and West Division All-Conference first team, with Luna earning Newcomer of the Year honors for the West All-Conference team. The teams were announced last month and were based on voting by the Conference's 15 head coaches.

Luna, who earned all-district honors as an outfielder for Pecos in 1998 and 1999, helping the Eagles advance to the Region I-4A semifinals his senior season, batted .317 with six doubles this season for Howard Payne, while Gutierrez, an all-district pick in 1996-98 for the Eagles batted .438 this season for HPU with 20 RBI.

Luna and Gutierrez were the only first team selections for Howard Payne on the All-Conference squad, and only one other West Texas player, Wall's Matt Sefick, was named to the first team, as a first baseman for Sul Ross State University.

Clinic for volleyball set next week

The annual summer volleyball clinic for seventh through ninth grade girls will be held next week at the Pecos High School gym, coach Becky Granado said today.

The clinic for incoming seventh and eighth graders will be next Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, while ninth graders this coming year will go from 1 to 4 p.m. next week.

The fee for the clinic is $5 per girl and can be paid the first day each player attends the clinic, Granado said.
