Interviews set next week for PHS grid coach

Applications are being taken this week, and interviews will be conducted next week for the vacant head football coaching position at Pecos High School, athletic director Bubba Williams said today.

The position came open last week when Gary Grubbs resigned after three years on the job to take the head coach and athletic director's position at Eldorado High School south of San Angelo.

"We'll close the applications this Friday and start interviewing next Wednesday," Williams said today. "We've already had several applicants from the surrounding area."

"We want to try and make the choice sometime soon, so they can get with the kids," Williams said of the selection process, which would then have to be approved by the Pecos-Barstow-Toyah ISD school board. The board's next scheduled meeting is July 11, but superintendent Don Love said board members might make their final decision before that time.

The new head football coach will be the fifth in the past 10 years for the Eagles, after having only two head coaches the previous 23 seasons.

Tennis tourney sign-up deadline moved back

The registration deadline for the Pecos Cantaloupe Tennis Tournament has been moved back to next Wednesday, June 26, Pecos Eagles tennis coach Mike Ortiz said today.

The three-day tournament will be held next weekend, June 28-30, at the Pecos High School tennis courts and is open to both youth and adult players. Entry fee is $8 per player for each event.

Divisions for boys and for girls will be split into 10 and under, 12 and under, 14 and under, 16 and under and 18 and under. There will also be men and women's adult divisions and junior and open divisions for mixed doubles.

The tournament scoring will be best two out of three sets, with a 12-point tiebreaker at 6-all, and players are guaranteed at least two matches.

Play will begin at 8 a.m. on Friday, June 28, and at 9 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, June 29-30. Awards will be given to first and second place finishers along with consolation bracket winners.

Entry fees can be paid by check to Mike Ortiz, 106 W. 13th St., Pecos, Tx., 79772. For further information, call 631-5349.
