P-B-T students weight training turnout strong

Participation in summer weight training among Pecos High School athletes started off well on Monday, head football coach Gary Grubbs said, with over 70 incoming freshman through senior students attending either the morning or evening sessions.

"We had 71 kids the whole day and 61 Monday night," said Eagles' head football coach Gary Grubbs. "We're going to have more than that today, since this morning we had 16."

Grubbs said the students participating in the first day of the summer program were fairly evenly divided among the four grade levels, with most of those working out planning to play football for the Eagles this fall.

The lifters at the various weight stations are spotted by another student while lifting and supervised by one of the Pecos High School coaches. "The number of coaches varies day to day, because none of this is mandatory for the coaches and the kids," said Grubbs.

"We don't want to take away from the summer. The kids have things to do," said Grubbs, adding that some athletes have work or summer school during the day, while others have summer baseball at night.

"The coaches have drafted teams, and each coach has about 10 kids on their team, and they're responsible for trying to get the kids to attend," Grubbs said.

The Eagles have made the playoffs in football each of the past four seasons, but will be moving into the tougher District 4-3A this fall. Weight training will continue through July, and pre-season football workouts will begin in August.

The summer hours will continue at the old PHS gym until the beginning of the 2002-2003 school year in August.
