Eagles to see new district rivals early, often

The Pecos Eagles won't have to wonder much about how they shape up compared to their new District volleyball rivals next fall, when they begin their first season as a member of District 4-3A.

The Eagles are dropping down from Class 4A to 3A this coming fall, but will be keeping the bulk of their pre-district schedule from recent years. That means that the Eagles will play at least three and possibly all of their new district rivals before their 4-3A opener, on Sept. 24 in Kermit.

The Yellowjackets are one of the three 4-3A teams the Eagles will face right before the start of district play. They'll host Kermit and Presidio on Sept. 21 and travel to Fort Stockton on Sept. 17. The Eagles face the Blue Devils again in their district home opener on Sept. 28, and host Fort Stockton a week later, after going to Monahans for their second 4-3A road game.

"I don't know how it's going to be playing them so close to the start of district play," said Eagles' coach Becky Granado. "We'll just have to find out."

Pecos has qualified for the playoffs each of the past six seasons, winning the District 2-4A title in 1998 and 2000. But the Eagles figure to face much tougher competition for the three district playoff berths this coming season.

The mid-September matches with the Jackets, Blue Devils and Prowlers are holdovers from last season, when Pecos was part of District 2-4A and usually saw only Fabens or San Elizario before the start of district play. The Eagles aren't scheduled to play in pre-district against Monahans or Midland Greenwood, their other 4-3A rivals, but could face the Loboes and Rangerettes during tournament play in August and early September.

Pecos will go to the Sandhills Tournament in Monahans on Aug. 23-24, and then host their own Cantaloupe Classic on Aug. 30-31 before competing in the Seminole Tournament on Sept. 6-7.

That's the same tournament schedule for Pecos as in recent years, and the Eagles will open their 2002 season in the same place as they have the past few seasons, at Odessa High against the Bronchos and Alpine Bucks, who drop down to Class 2A this fall. That match is scheduled for Aug. 20, following scrimmage games on Aug. 16-17 in Pecos and Monahans

The only change to Pecos' pre-district schedule is the following week, when they'll go to Odessa to face the Permian Panthers and Lubbock High Westerners in a dual match. It replaces the dual match the Eagles have played the past several seasons against the Lee Rebels and Snyder Tigers in Midland.

The Eagles will alternate home and road matches throughout district play this season, a change from recent years when they would play as many as four games in a row at home or in the El Paso area. Starting times for the freshmen and junior varsity matches on Tuesdays will be 5:30 p.m., with the varsity contests set for 6:30 p.m., while Saturday afternoon matches will begin with the ninth graders at 2 p.m.

Regular season play for Pecos' freshmen and JV teams will also open on Aug. 20 against Alpine and Odessa High. The Crockett and Zavala Middle School volleyball teams are scheduled to begin their 2002 seasons on Sept. 5, with matches at home against Van Horn.
