Burgen, Campbell win top flight of tourney

By JON FULBRIGHT
Staff Writer

The team of Mark Burgen and Mike Campbell of Andrews  took home first place in the Championship Flight on Sunday in the  inaugural Beau Jack Tournament, held at the Reeves County Golf course.

The two-day Memorial Day weekend tournament has been held for many years, but was renamed this year in honor of Hendrick, the former Pecos-Barstow-Toyah ISD teacher and Austin Elementary principal who was also a tournament supervisor. Hendrick died of a heart attack last fall.

Burgen and Campbell shot a 205 in the tournament, which was based on two-man best ball scores on Saturday and combined scores on Sunday. That was four strokes ahead of Sammy Jimenez and Randy Martin, who finished second. Matt Burkholder and Curtis Howard shot a 215 to finish third, and Ruben and Michael Baca shot a 217 to place fourth.

In the First Flight of the tournament, the winners were Joe and Michael Carrillo, who shot a 217 to beat out Jim Espy and Jim Pogue by one stroke. Roger Espinoza and Jeremy Doporto won a playoff for third over Kuko Nunez and Augustine Morales, after both teams shot 222 scores over the two days of play.

In the Second Flight, Carlos and Israel Nichols shot a 224 to win first place by one stroke over Phil Westerman and Mark Osbourne. Tom Aguilar and Ray Evero were one stroke behind them, at 226, while Tim Windham and Ken Winkles were fourth with a 228 score.

Ruben Baca, Sr., and Rico Pino were the winners in the Third Flight of the tournament, shooting a 237 to beat out Jay Nabors and Michael Moore, who shot a 238. Eddie Pallarez and Armondo Gutierrez shot a 240 to place third, and Gilbert Herrera and Jesse Anchondo were fourth, at 241.

In the Fourth Flight, Ronnie Ott and Cliff Davis won a scorecard playoff for first place over Jimbo Martinez and Craig Mitchell, after both teams finished with 247 scores. Bill and Scott Cooksey ended up in third, with a 247 total.
