Sign-up, start-up dates set for PBT summer athletics

Sign-ups are today for one of the Pecos-Barstow-Toyah ISD  summer recreation programs, while registration for the other  programs will begin next week, at the time the activities get underway.

Sign-ups for the summer golf program are from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the Crockett Middle School gym, according to golf coach Tina Hendrick.

The summer program will begin next Monday. Elementary school students will participate in the early morning hours, while students going into Grades 8-12 will have their classes from 11-11:45 a.m. Monday through Thursday at the Crockett field and from 8 a.m. to 12 noon on Fridays at the Reeves County Golf Course.

Supplies needed are golf clubs, three golf balls, tees and a cap or hat. Water bottles are optional. For further information, contact coach Hendrick at 447-9347.

Sign-ups will be next Monday for the P-B-T summer track program, from 5 to 9 p.m. at the new Pecos High School gym. Coach Roxie Chavez said schedules will be handed out to students that evening, and the summer program will begin next Tuesday, June 4.

The program will run from 8-10 a.m. Monday through Friday between June 4 and June 28. Chavez said she is still looking for out-of-town track meets as part of the summer program. "Some of the schools that have had them in the past aren't doing it this year," she said.

Sign-ups also are next Monday for the first session of the P-B-T summer tennis program. The session will run from June 3-14, with kindergarten and first grade students going from 8-8:30 a.m., second and third graders from 8:30 to 9 a.m., fourth through sixth graders from 9 to 9:45 a.m., junior high players from 10 to 10:45 a.m. and high schoolers from 11 a.m. to 12 noon.

The second session will run from June 17-28 with sign-ups on opening day, Coach Mike Ortiz said.

Equipment needed is one tennis racquet, a water jug, hand towel, sunscreen and a cap or visor, fees are $5 for one player, $7 for two players per family and $10 for three players. For further information, call Ortiz at 445-2185.

Coach Gary Grubbs said weightlifting hours during the summer will be Mondays through Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Pecos High School field house. The weight room will be open beginning Monday and continue through July 12 for the general public, and through July 18 for high school students.

Summer volleyball and basketball will alternate days in the PHS new gym. Coach Becky Granado said the volleyball will open next Monday and run Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 3 to 9 p.m. from June 3-21, and again from July 1-5. The week of June 24, the program will be open from 6 to 9 p.m. while the summer clinics are held. Cost for the summer program is $5 per student.

The clinics are June 24-28 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon for seventh and eighth graders and from 1 to 4 p.m. for ninth graders.

Coach Joe Flores said the summer basketball program would be held on alternate days to the volleyball program, and that a full schedule would be available later this week.
